Maxi Sighting!!

Just a quick update on Maxi. She was the young pregnant kitty we trapped in the Spring. I was feeding Monroe & Co a few nights ago and I was a little later than normal. I could see this cat at the far end of the lot creeping over. I couldn't tell at first but I wanted to see if it could possibly be Maxi. I ducked behind the fence as kitty approached. As she got closer, I could see it was Maxi!!! She looks great!!! I was so happy to see that she still feeds in our lot and so happy to see her looking so healthy. Maxi has grown into a beautiful tiger stripped cat!

Progress with Brody!

Brody is making wonderful progress!! We still aren't 100% but we are much better than last week. He is starting to eat more. He is a champ at taking his droppers of water & karo syrup. We have to do one more round of de-wormer and hopefully our diarrhea will subside. Brody hasn't fallen in love with any of the food yet, but I am trying something new today, fingers crossed. He still hisses when I pick him up but then he relaxes pretty quickly. He will even fall asleep in my arms now and he lets me clean him with a warn cloth and rub his head and neck. Sometimes after he is relaxed and calm in my arms he will give me a little half-hearted hiss, just to remind me that he is in charge ;) Gerry and I will be giving him a bath this week which he desperately needs and then a potential adopter may come visit him this weekend! Brody isn't ready to be adopted yet but a friend of Mila & Humphrey's mom is very interested in him. Hopefully he will wait until little Brody is ready. He will be with me for another few weeks as he grows stronger and gets more comfortable with people. I know he will be the best kitten ever soon enough!
We have given him a birthday too! 9/12/12! And check out his perfect heart marking above his eye. It's adorable!!

Brody Update :)

So, Brody had his first vet visit last night and he is officially a 6-week old little boy! He tested negative for FIV & Leukemia which is great news! Brody is severly dehydrated so Dr. Lauren gave him a shot which will hydrate him for 12 hours. He also tested positive for roundworm and had a moderate to severe case of fleas. Dr. Lauren gave him a de-wormer and the flea medication so he is already feeling much better as the flea medication works it's magic in 2 hours. When I got him home after the vet, Brody sat up for the first time! He finally ate too!! He ate a decent amount of food overnight and early this morning so that is a great sign. He is using the litter box like a champ too! Dr. Lauren called to check on him this morning and said that the roundworms take about 2 days to die off so he will feel a bit sluggish during this time. As far as the social skills go, they are a bit slow. He still hates me ;) BUT I have hope that once he feels better and starts to eat regularly and feel more safe, he will come around and hopefully start to play! We are getting a lot of rain today and so the timing couldn't have been better. I don't think he would have made it much longer in the shape he was in. One of our wonderful fosters, Miracle Myra, will help us socialize him soon, once he is feeling better.

Meet Brody!!!!

Meet Brody :)
Brody was found yesterday right near the corner of Ash & Pacific streets in Jersey City NJ. I was driving by looking at a new apartment building and near the dumpster in the back was this small kitten who was pooping & shivering. It was 60 degrees yesterday and the poor thing was so dirty and so cold. I knew he wouldn't make it too much longer as the temps are going to really drop soon. He ran as soon as I got out of my car and ducked under a wooden fence. I put out some food on a piece of cardboard that I found nearby and he came back and started to eat. I tried to get close and back under the fence he went. So I waited a little longer and he came back. This time I got on my hands and knees and SLOWLY, inch by inch, crept towards him. I never looked directly as him and kept looking down to show I was not a danger to him. He reluctantly kept eating but kept a close eye on me. After about 15-20 min I was very close, appearing like I was going to maybe share the food with him. I didn't have my trap or carrier with me. I knew my car door was open so I would have to pull off a serious 'ninja type' move to get him. I knew I had ONE shot bc if I missed, he would go under the fence and take off. Honestly, I didn't have a lot of hope. But, he looked to be about 6-7 weeks and needed to be rescued. I knew I was in for a bunch of bites and/or scratches. (Note to self, add leather gloves to feline rescue kit in Jeep ASAP!!) So here goes, one shot... I grabbed him in his middle as quickly as I could, I couldn't believe I pulled it off! I had him!!! HOLY OUCH!!! He tore into my left fingers but I knew I had to hang on or he would be gone for sure!!! I held on, blood running down my hand and got him into my Jeep. WHEW! We were both shaking at this point. I had never done anything like this before... and I truly don't recommend it. I just felt I had to get him. (This area of JC is not a great area and he could really get hurt or die, if not by the weather change, by something else.) He was alone, so little, skinny, hungry, dirty and cold.   I wasn't sure how bad the bites were, I was bleeding pretty bad and it hurt like hell. I also knew the poor kitty was beyond scared but we got home and I placed him in my carrier (with a towel this time!) and he is resting in our bathroom. Cleaned the bites with peroxide and neosporin and started an antibiotic just to be safe.
Side note: Cuts are already 80% better today so that's great!!
Brody is still pretty nervous of course but he is safe now and has plenty of food, water and KMR and is warm with a big blanket and new toys. He has eaten some food, drank the KMR and used the litter box a few times already. I am hoping he will start to socialize soon and start to clean his pretty fur! I already have a potential adopter for him!! He is such a cutie I am sure he will be ready for a great home soon!! He reminds me so much of our little guy Humphrey who was also found on the tough streets of JC.
Please keep your thoughts and prayers with Brody as we start this path towards full recovery!!
