Maxi Sighting!!

Just a quick update on Maxi. She was the young pregnant kitty we trapped in the Spring. I was feeding Monroe & Co a few nights ago and I was a little later than normal. I could see this cat at the far end of the lot creeping over. I couldn't tell at first but I wanted to see if it could possibly be Maxi. I ducked behind the fence as kitty approached. As she got closer, I could see it was Maxi!!! She looks great!!! I was so happy to see that she still feeds in our lot and so happy to see her looking so healthy. Maxi has grown into a beautiful tiger stripped cat!

Progress with Brody!

Brody is making wonderful progress!! We still aren't 100% but we are much better than last week. He is starting to eat more. He is a champ at taking his droppers of water & karo syrup. We have to do one more round of de-wormer and hopefully our diarrhea will subside. Brody hasn't fallen in love with any of the food yet, but I am trying something new today, fingers crossed. He still hisses when I pick him up but then he relaxes pretty quickly. He will even fall asleep in my arms now and he lets me clean him with a warn cloth and rub his head and neck. Sometimes after he is relaxed and calm in my arms he will give me a little half-hearted hiss, just to remind me that he is in charge ;) Gerry and I will be giving him a bath this week which he desperately needs and then a potential adopter may come visit him this weekend! Brody isn't ready to be adopted yet but a friend of Mila & Humphrey's mom is very interested in him. Hopefully he will wait until little Brody is ready. He will be with me for another few weeks as he grows stronger and gets more comfortable with people. I know he will be the best kitten ever soon enough!
We have given him a birthday too! 9/12/12! And check out his perfect heart marking above his eye. It's adorable!!

Brody Update :)

So, Brody had his first vet visit last night and he is officially a 6-week old little boy! He tested negative for FIV & Leukemia which is great news! Brody is severly dehydrated so Dr. Lauren gave him a shot which will hydrate him for 12 hours. He also tested positive for roundworm and had a moderate to severe case of fleas. Dr. Lauren gave him a de-wormer and the flea medication so he is already feeling much better as the flea medication works it's magic in 2 hours. When I got him home after the vet, Brody sat up for the first time! He finally ate too!! He ate a decent amount of food overnight and early this morning so that is a great sign. He is using the litter box like a champ too! Dr. Lauren called to check on him this morning and said that the roundworms take about 2 days to die off so he will feel a bit sluggish during this time. As far as the social skills go, they are a bit slow. He still hates me ;) BUT I have hope that once he feels better and starts to eat regularly and feel more safe, he will come around and hopefully start to play! We are getting a lot of rain today and so the timing couldn't have been better. I don't think he would have made it much longer in the shape he was in. One of our wonderful fosters, Miracle Myra, will help us socialize him soon, once he is feeling better.

Meet Brody!!!!

Meet Brody :)
Brody was found yesterday right near the corner of Ash & Pacific streets in Jersey City NJ. I was driving by looking at a new apartment building and near the dumpster in the back was this small kitten who was pooping & shivering. It was 60 degrees yesterday and the poor thing was so dirty and so cold. I knew he wouldn't make it too much longer as the temps are going to really drop soon. He ran as soon as I got out of my car and ducked under a wooden fence. I put out some food on a piece of cardboard that I found nearby and he came back and started to eat. I tried to get close and back under the fence he went. So I waited a little longer and he came back. This time I got on my hands and knees and SLOWLY, inch by inch, crept towards him. I never looked directly as him and kept looking down to show I was not a danger to him. He reluctantly kept eating but kept a close eye on me. After about 15-20 min I was very close, appearing like I was going to maybe share the food with him. I didn't have my trap or carrier with me. I knew my car door was open so I would have to pull off a serious 'ninja type' move to get him. I knew I had ONE shot bc if I missed, he would go under the fence and take off. Honestly, I didn't have a lot of hope. But, he looked to be about 6-7 weeks and needed to be rescued. I knew I was in for a bunch of bites and/or scratches. (Note to self, add leather gloves to feline rescue kit in Jeep ASAP!!) So here goes, one shot... I grabbed him in his middle as quickly as I could, I couldn't believe I pulled it off! I had him!!! HOLY OUCH!!! He tore into my left fingers but I knew I had to hang on or he would be gone for sure!!! I held on, blood running down my hand and got him into my Jeep. WHEW! We were both shaking at this point. I had never done anything like this before... and I truly don't recommend it. I just felt I had to get him. (This area of JC is not a great area and he could really get hurt or die, if not by the weather change, by something else.) He was alone, so little, skinny, hungry, dirty and cold.   I wasn't sure how bad the bites were, I was bleeding pretty bad and it hurt like hell. I also knew the poor kitty was beyond scared but we got home and I placed him in my carrier (with a towel this time!) and he is resting in our bathroom. Cleaned the bites with peroxide and neosporin and started an antibiotic just to be safe.
Side note: Cuts are already 80% better today so that's great!!
Brody is still pretty nervous of course but he is safe now and has plenty of food, water and KMR and is warm with a big blanket and new toys. He has eaten some food, drank the KMR and used the litter box a few times already. I am hoping he will start to socialize soon and start to clean his pretty fur! I already have a potential adopter for him!! He is such a cutie I am sure he will be ready for a great home soon!! He reminds me so much of our little guy Humphrey who was also found on the tough streets of JC.
Please keep your thoughts and prayers with Brody as we start this path towards full recovery!!

Halloween 2011 Rescue Kitty Update

With Halloween just around the corner, we starting thinking about last years big rescue. Here is an update on two of the kittens that were rescued that day. Bobby (the tuxedo) and Madison (the tortie) were 2 of the five kittens found in the abandoned warehouse in Hoboken. They were adopted together and live in a wonderful home in Hoboken complete with two amazing parents and a very sweet and funny young girl named Ryan. It was so great to find them a home together because Madison really needed to be with one of her siblings. She wasn't a happy girl while she was alone in foster for a few days after her brother RJ was adopted. We immediately put her in Bobby's foster home so she could be with one of her siblings and then we had our happy healthy kitten back! I can't believe they are 1 year old right about now!

The family has said that they are doing really well! Both are very affectionate, and Madison has 'turned into an excellent hunter... there have been a few bug-catching incidents in recent days.' Bobby's a total mush, loves to sit in their laps when they are watching TV. 'Lots of watching the squirrels in the trees outside our windows.' They're also both big lickers... Madison will spend a half-hour grooming her daddy's arm hair if he lets her. This is funny because when I was fostering all five of the kittens, they would clean each other constantly. I was shocked at the amount of time they would spend on one another. I guess they kept it up!

They continued on to say that Ryan just loves them both, and Maddie is particularly easy with her. Ry used to pick her up and just carry her around by her front armpits "so she'll get used to me picking her up". And Maddie didn't seem to mind at all.

Sounds like everyone is doing great and we couldn't be happier! Madison and Bobby were very special kittens. Funny Bobby especially won our hearts over while he was with us after the rescue. We knew Madison would be terrific with little Ryan as she was always the gentle little sister of the litter. Another happy fairyTAIL ending!!

Meet Patience, one of our outdoor kitties in Hoboken

This is Patience :) She is our little girl that we have been trying to TNR for quite a while now. We named her Patience because she will not go in the trap. She will sit near it and just wait. She is such a pretty little girl. We are determined to get her next week. Fingers crossed that Patience will finally go in the trap.
We are going to try lightly cooked hamburger meat this time. A fellow TNR'er said that is her little secret! (and if that doesn't work, I will try my cat Redford's favorite special treat... yes, lump crab meat!!)
Photo was taken last night by my wonderful boyfriend Andrew, who built their feeding station.

How can I help... I am only ONE person...

Many people have come up to me over the years and have said, they wish they could do more or even just do something, but they are only ONE person... That is why we created this blog. One person can do more than they probably realize.

This is Lauhu!! She is a LOVE! Lauhu was found in a warehouse in Hoboken by my fellow rescue friends Patti & Robyn. Now Laushu has a loving home with a terrific family. Patti & Robyn do a lot of rescue work and I was lucky enough to meet them, become friends with them & learn from them. When I decided I wanted to try and help, I too thought, I am only one person, what can I really accomplish? What I didn't realize back then, was I would meet people who shared my interest and my passion to help. I may not be able to do everything that I want to do as one person but, we help each other along the way... where we can, when we can. Sometimes help is making and distributing flyers or facebook shares. Sometimes help is passing on a potential adopter to one another to assist in finding good homes. Sometimes help is just being around to support one another during the TNR process. The support and assistance is always there so even though I am only one person, I have a great community around me that have their hearts & minds open to help.
So this post is to all of the people who think they can't do much... just try and do something, try and get involved and you will find other caring people who are doing the same. Then 'one' becomes Many and great things will happen.

August Kitties Looking For Homes

50 Shades of Grey... and Black, and Orange and White! Here are some of the kittens looking for their forever homes! If you know anyone who may want to adopt a furry friend, please consider visiting CAP, Inc. in Hoboken NJ. You can find their link on this blog or email spayme@aol.com for more information.

TNR Success

We are happy to report another trapping success in West New York! Gerry and I trapped 2 black & white kitties. One was male and the other was a pregnant female. Both kitties were under a year old. It shows how fast they get pregnant. Tux & Spot (named by a little girl whose father owns the restaurant where we trapped) have been fixed and are doing well. They recovered quickly after the surgery. We fostered them through the weekend so they could recover and avoid the very hot weather our area had. We had a big storm Sunday night and they were happily safe & dry inside. Monday morning, they were ready to go "home" so we released them back to their outdoor adventures. They ran off happy to be free again. Both kitties are much better off now that they are fixed. Our male Tux will be much less likely to fight and roam and Spot won't have multiple litters. Please consider taking a course in TNR (trap, neuter, release) if offered in your area or educate yourself online. It is a great way to help the kitties in your neighborhood.

Update on Mr. Seven

I just realized that we never did a final post on Seven. For those who remember, a few months ago, my friend Gerry and I found a small black kitty on Seventh Street. He was very hungry, matted, skinny and walking around at 9am. Morning hours are very busy with walking commuters so this is odd behavior to be out and about for city cats. We gave him food and he was just standing out in the rain... also a bit strange. We realized that his eye was not quite right and he was limping. We decided to trap him and took him to the vet and they said he was covered with wounds. His back legs were in bad shape. Although the vet's policy is not to keep feral cats, they kept Seven (cute name right!) for 3 weeks so he could heal. They neutered him and gave him a bunch of antibiotics. He finally got a clean bill of health and although we were hoping to socialize him and make him an indoor kitty, that wasn't meant to be. We had to release Seven back outside, but he was now a neutered male, so much less likely to fight. We have had a few Seven sightings since we released him so it appears he is doing well. The vet said Seven was a day or two away from certain death when we took him in, so he was very lucky to be out and about that morning. As Gerry always says, 'if you see something, do something'.

Feeding Station 101

This is our outdoor feeding station. My boyfriend built it with some simple pressure treated plywood and used a pallet for the base. It has two openings so multiple cats can eat without disturbing one another. You can see one opening on this end and the other is on the opposite end. Our outside kitties have a few bowls of food (wet & dry) and a water bowl each day. I did some weeding around the box so I have a clear path to both sides without clearing away their tall grass. This box works great and is a good sample for others who have outdoor kitties. Andy also built two winter shelters out of large tupperware tubs and straw. I will post those pictures another time.

And here is Monroe, one of our outdoor kitties! He waits for us every day. He even has a mockingbird friend who follows him and signals our arrival. We have named him Simon. The two are very cute together. I will have to get a picture of Simon one of these days. Monroe has been fixed, given a rabies shot, and is a very happy outdoor cat. He is too feral to bring inside. I love seeing him every day after work.

Choosing the Purrfect Pet Sitter

CHOOSING THE PURRFECT PET SITTER By CATMAN MARK BLANCHARD of The Cats Meow Services in Hudson County NJ (My AMAZING Cat Sitter!)
You take extreme care when finding the right caregiver for your children. The same care should be taken when finding the purrfect person to provide love and care for your fur children:
*Do your research. Consider several local pet sitters and look at their records and reviews on sites like Kannekt.com or yahoo groups like the Hoboken and Jersey City Moms Boards. Ask your friends who are pet parents whom they use.  A sitter who has a lot of clients or the fanciest web site may see caring for your Cat or other loved pet as a job, not as a joy.

*Call and pre screen the sitter. Ask them questions like:
*How long have they been sitting.
*Can they provide CURRENT  references you can contact to ask questions.
*Are they bonded and insured in case something horrible happens.
*What makes their services stand out from others. Can the sitter administer medicines? Can they come care for your pets last minute and on weekends or holidays (Remember pet sitting is NOT a 9-5 job)
*Make sure the sitter is upfront on rates (do they charge extra for holidays, do they charge extra for giving meds) and other policies like cancellation fees and payment methods.
*Many sitters have associates work with them. Ask if the person you are interviewing will come to care for your pet or will they send another person. A good service will have ONE person dedicated to the care of your pet rather than "musical sitters." Sitters should also be upfront if they will use a second person and make sure you get to meet that person.
*Do an in home interview with the sitters you are considering. Here's a trick  I use when I meet clients and their fur children. A good sitter will go directly to bond with your pet within 30 seconds. See if the prospective sitter sits on the floor with your pet and allows your Cat or other pet to sniff them and check them out. Sitters should know it's the PET they will deal with more than not the human owner.
Once your settle on a sitter consider a trial run. Let the sitter come for a weekend or a visit or two. See how your pet is doing when you come home. If the pet is at ease and happy, then you have a winning pet sitter!

Lost Pet?

http://petdetectiveusa.com/
I recently met a woman whose sister lost her two cats. They escaped through the screen door and were lost in the neighborhood with coyotes and snakes. Her sister was extremely upset and willing to do anything to get her cats back. She contacted Carl, the Pet Detective. With his help, she has already captured one of her two kitties and hopes to bring the other one safely home soon. She said Carl was very helpful and his charges were resonable. She was so happy that she contacted him. I hope I don't ever require his services but if I ever do, I will absolutely reach out to him. He has been featured on CNN, Fox, etc. If you know someone who has lost their pet, Carl may be very helpful.

Pet Trusts - Pet Protection Agreement

A note from Mark the Catman:
Pets Trusts… Securing a Forever Home When You Are Gone.

One think that makes us sad is to hear of Cats and other pets abandoned and dumped at shelters when their owner died or no longer can care for them. As you put together plans for your estate from where assets are distributed to who gets the family silver you should think about a Pet Trust… and choose a caregiver for your fur babies:
*Select someone who you trust and who can provide a loving permanent forever home for your pets when you cannot anymore.

*Make sure you thoroughly discuss you custody plan with your pets “Foster Mom or Dad” and make sure they agree to take your pets in permanently.

*Create a legal document, a Pet Protection Agreement. You can get a template at Legal Zoom:
http://www.legalzoom.com/pet-trust-agreement/pet-protection-overview.html

Get the document notarized and keep a copy in a safe place. Let your family know where it is.
*Always have a second person to be a caregiver if your initial choice falls through.
*Another good idea is to discuss your trust plans with your pet sitter who would be a contact for your caregiver if needed.

Sibling Love

Well this sure didn't take too long!! Look how cute Mila and her new brother Humphrey are together :) I have to say I am a bit jealous as my grown male cats have been together for 6 years and they have yet to do anything like this.
I am however so happy for Mila, Humphrey and the Mommy Jennifer. What a beautiful shot.

Animals in Need (and the reason we fix male feral cats)

Wednesday morning I spotted an all black kitty who was clearly in rough shape and struggling to walk. My friend Gerry and I were able to feed him and trap him and brought him to the vet. One of his eyes was not right and he looked skinny and matted. We spoke to the vet and Seven (we found him on 7th Street) is doing okay. He has a lot of bite marks and scratches that are infected and very swollen, all over his body and legs which is why he is having trouble walking. His eye is a result of a past injury/trauma. They have neutered him, given him a 10 day antibiotic and he is recovering. Poor kitty. This is why it is important to fix male outside cats too, bc if they are not fixed, they will get into more fights, causing injury and passing on illnesses. Thursday (today) they will run the blood work and let me know if he tests positive for FIV/Leukemia. If he can be socialized, I will hope to find him a home. The poor guy is only about 4-5 years old. Fingers are crossed that he can be re-homed. He has had a tough life so far. CAP, Inc. (Companion Animal Placement) is an amazing rescue group who is helping us right now with Seven.
If you see an aminal in need, please do not turn your back on them. It can seem overwhelming to help sometimes, but if you can help, your heart will feel the reward.
UPDATE: Seven's test results came back negative! We am so excited to hear that! We thought with the amount of bit wounds he had, there was a good chance he would be positive. Now to see if Mr. Seven can be socialized... :)

Directly by Nature, Remedies for Animals

Every pet, just like every person, has their own little issues with behavior. I have often struggled with inter-cat aggression with my two grown male cats. I wanted to share a site that I found very interesting. I ordered the book about Bach's remedies for cats and a bottle of the Holly which I am hoping will help my two kitties. It is all natural and both of my cats are water drinkers so this should be a breeze to administer. I will update with my results in a month or so. Everything takes time and patience. If you have your own issues with your pets, from jealousy to boredom to aggression to shyness, click this link and maybe this can help.

Humphrey Update

As we are looking for homes for our March/April kitties, we received a new pic from Humphrey's mommy. He is really just too cute for words, and look at how much he has grown. So happy for Humphrey :)

I had to add one more of his baby pics - SO Cute!

Kitten Season has Begun!

We have new kittens who need their forever homes. Please check the 'we need a home' tab and send the link out to people who may be interested. Kitten season is in bloom :)

TNR Success

We have been feeding this kitty for a few months. We are unsure if kitty is male or female but we will know for sure this evening :) We trapped him last night. The trap is twice as long but you can only see half of it. He will be spay/neutered today and re-released in a day or so back to his home. We will continue feeding him every day. It's great to feed feral cats but its better to fix them & feed them. This way they don't multiply. It also helps lessen the spread of disease, bc males that are fixed fight & roam much less. We have one more kitty to fix and then we may have completed our Madison Street colony!! Some kitties that we trap can be adopted out but some are just too feral. This kitty, although beautiful, is too feral to adopt out. Sometimes after they are fixed they become friendlier, so we will see if that happens. If he becomes a mush then we will try and find him a happy indoor home. :)

UPDATE: Kitty (who I have named Maxi) was a female AND in the very early stages of pregnancy with 5 kittens! This was a great TNR. If she wasn't trapped, she would have had the litter of 5 kittens. 2 or 3 of them would have likely been female, and those females would have also been pregnant in 5-6 months. By the fall, we could have had an extra +/- 20 cats living on the street. I am so happy Maxi is fixed now. She is only a baby herself, 9 months old. She was too feral to adopt out so we re-released her to her home last night. She did great post surgery and is so much better off now. Maxi will continue to be fed everyday and will not have to worry about getting pregnant anymore :)

Oscar Weekend Rescue!

Our newest rescue kitten, Humphry!!
Humphry is 8 weeks old. Yep, that means he is a New Years baby!
Humphry was found by two teenagers in Jersey City. He was crying all by himself on sidewalk only a few yards from one of the busiest streets in Jersey City. He is one lucky kitty! Through friends of friends of friends, they found us and asked for help finding him a home.
The mommy of one of our other success stories wanted a kitten-friend for Mila and opened her heart & home to this little guy.
She named him Humphry after Humphry Bogart. They are twins :)
We know Jennifer will keep us updated on their lovely life together! xoxo

Tips from the Catman (Hoboken's BEST Cat Sitter!) 2/26/12

CATPROOF AND SAVE YOUR KITTY!

Recently one of my dear Cat clients had to have surgery after eating a dryer sheet. Another Cat friend got very sick after eating a tissue. This raises the importance of Catproofing your home (it also applies to Dogs.)

Please make sure these items are safely kept away from Kitty Paws:

*Plastic bags: the chemicals in the bag are enticing to Cats.
*Dryer sheets
*Paper including tissue and toilet paper
*Plants and flowers like baby’s breath which is added to Valentine Roses bouquets.
*Rubber bands
*Twist ties on bread and other items
*Any kind of tape. I recently caught my dear Tigger trying to snack on packing tape.
*Medicine especially pills.
*Toys with long strings or fishing line, so your kitty doesn't get tangled when you are not at home.

Doing these little preventative steps can save heartache, sleepless nights and big vet bills

Makes all the hard work worth it!

This is what makes all the hard work worth it. These kitties (Bobby & Madison) were born in an abandoned warehouse in Hoboken NJ. Now they are living the good life with a wonderful family surrounded by tons of love!

Behavior Issues? Try Pheromones!

A few years ago, I was struggling with inter-cat aggression with my two cats, Chester & Redford. It's a very common problem that many people have in multi-pet households. I had tried everything I could come up with and nothing seemed to work. Giving up one of my cats was not an option for me. I did a little more research and found the Cat Behavior Clinic (see link on home page). One of the main suggestions I was given was to try pheromones. http://www.feliway.com/us

I had never heard about pheromones before. I looked on some different websites for reviews and I was amazed by what I was reading! What I learned from the Behavior Clinic was that all cats have a natural amount of stress naturally built in to their personalities. It's almost too much stress, although it is natural. The pheromones balance this out without medication. It not only helps with inter-cat aggression but also with scratching, spraying and territorial issues. Feliway is a brand that I recommend and I get my supplies from Amazon.com. Many sites carry them but I seem to get the best deals on Amazon. You would need to purchase a diffuser (similar to a glade plug-in) and the refills. Each diffuser is a one-time purchase and the refills last about a month. It is a small investment but I have noticed a big difference and a major decline in fighting. I can even tell when I am running low because Chester gets very irritable and is easily aggravated by Red. Each diffuser covers about 700sf. I highly recommend trying pheromones in cases with behavioral problems. I have read they work for dogs too!
Okay - I have been a die hard NY baseball fan for a long time, but now I may have to consider cheering on Tampa Bay :) Check out this link for their new mascot!

Ear Tipping & Lola Update

Lola!! Lola has really cool markings and she is such a love bug :) If you look closely you will notice that her left ear is 'tipped'*. When we first found Lola and her kittens, we planned to have them vet-checked, fixed, then adopt out her kittens, and return Lola to her 'home'.  We had her ear 'tipped' so other people would know she was already fixed and wouldn't work to TNR her. Then after just a little time with Lola, we realized what a sweet kitty she was and decided to find her a home too. So glad we did! She was adopted by a friend who sends updates and pictures all of the time. They are very happy together!

*Ear tipping is when the vet clips the very top of the ear, it does not hurt the cat. This is important to do to outside/feral cats because it shows that the cat has been fixed. This way the cat isn't found again and taken in for the same surgery.

Rescue Updates!

Some updates on recent rescues!!

Corrina was rescued & adopted in June 2011, she was 6 months old. Her new daddy David needed to move back to Utah in January 2012. He took Corrina with him!! So many people leave their cats behind so we were so happy David kept his commitment to Corrina and she is loving life in Utah!!

And Sparky!! Check him out, all dressed up with his new family :) He is surrounded by so much love in his new home!

Pet Air Travel Tip

Tip of the day 1/30/12: When traveling on an airplane with your pet, make sure you put your pet in a harness while in the carrier. You will need to take your pet out of the carrier in the security check. Your pet could get scared so having them in a harness is important. Keep the leash seperate and outside of the carrier so your pet does not get tangled up.

Introducing a new cat to your home

One of the most common questions we get is, 'how do I bring a new cat into my home when I already have a cat?' There is a lot of information online about introducing a new pet but we find the ASPCA has the best information. Here is the link to their article on introducing a new cat.
http://www.aspcabehavior.org/articles/26/Introducing-Your-Cat-to-a-New-Cat.aspx
We can't emphasize enough how important it is to follow the steps detailed in this article. Many people open their homes to a new cat and don't follow the steps above and when it doesn't work out, they give the new cat up. Bringing a new cat into the home takes time and patience. There are some pets who just need to be a solo pet, but most can learn to live together as long as the introduction is done correctly.
